2020 was the worst year for dog thefts in the UK and has continued to be a huge problem in 2021, with an estimated 250% increase in dognappings nationwide. Dogs have been stolen from outside shops, robbed from owners at knife point, but are most commonly taken from people’s gardens. More sophisticated criminals have even posed as RSPCA officers.
It’s an unsettling reality for dog owners across the country. Below we have advice on how you can best protect your dog from being stolen, and what you need to do if thieves do take your dog.

For all those wondering what happened to our Facebook Page (https://www.facebook.com/JK9UK/) it was removed without warning or explanation by Facebook.
We have been in contact with Facebook over the last few weeks about why they removed our official UK page but they were unable to give us an answer. We were simply told that the page “must have violated Facebook policy”. When we asked for more details on how our page could have violated policy, they couldn’t tell us, or explain in anyway why the page was deleted.
This is extremely frustrating. We have only ever shared blog posts, interacted with customers, and promoted sales and special offers on our page. We have literally no idea how anything we have ever posted could have violated any Facebook policies. Again, they offered us zero warning about this removal, didn’t even inform us it was removed, and couldn’t provide a single reason why it was removed.

It is recommended that you hand wash all of our harnesses. In this quick guide we breakdown the best methods of keeping your official JULIUS-K9® dog harness clean and fresh.
Basic washing instructions:
- Hand wash only
- Do not bleach
- Do not iron
- Do not dry clean
- Do not tumble dry
Hand wash cleaning guide:
- Use a warm, damp cloth to wipe off excess mud.
- Remove all the hook-and-loop labels from the side of the harness. These should be cleaned separately with a warm damp cloth as tough brushes can scrub off the lettering. This will also allow you to wash away any fur and grim built up on the fasteners.
- Fill your sink or a tub full of hot water and give the harness a good soaking.
- Using a brush and washing up liquid start scrubbing

A well fitted dog collar is important for your dog’s safety and comfort. If the collar is too tight this will cause discomfort which can provoke uncharacteristic behaviour, and can even restrict breathing.
If the collar is too loose then this can be equally dangerous. It can slip into unsuitable positions around the neck and can choke when the leash is pulled. A loose collar can also easily snag on branches or other obstacles if you let your dog off-lead.
Finding The Right Size
Measuring and fitting a collar correctly is easy when you know how. Simply Measure, Add, and think Safety.
- Measure: Use a cloth measuring tape and measure your dog’s neck circumference. Make sure the tape is snug but not tight to be sure of a correct measurement.
- Add: Add two inches to the measurement for the best collar size.

It’s important to remain safe when taking your dog for a walk in the early morning or at night, especially in the darker winter months. Kitting your dog out in suitable warm clothing such as jackets, vests, and even dog boots helps keep your dog comfortable, but you should also be thinking about staying visible.
Even if you’re planning on sticking to pavements and well lit walkways, gearing your dog up to stay seen with light emitting equipment and glow in the dark wear will help you and your dog stand out.
Below is our most popular night time visibility wear for dogs.
