Double ended dog leads connect to both your dog’s harness and collar, providing extra control. This can be very useful for leash training or allowing for added handling when taking larger breeds for walks.

Not only do they give you improved control but they are also designed to distribute pressure evenly across the dog’s body. When used with a correctly fitted harness and collar, double ended leads provide two safe points of contact, helping to prevent excess pressure from being applied to one spot.

How To Fit A Double Ended Lead

Double leads come with two carabiner clips which are clipped to D-ring attachments on both your dog’s collar and harness. Double ended leads are adjustable so you can get the perfect length between the two connection points.

Depending on the length of your double ended dog lead, it can be used on its own as a standalone leash or you can attach your regular walking lead to it for added length.

Front clip control

If your harness has a front D-ring, you can clip your double ended dog lead to the back of the harness and to the front, providing a greater handling experience. Front lead attachment dog harnesses are a popular choice for professional canine handlers and pet owners teaching lead discipline. This is because they provide more control when dogs pull and allow easier directional steering.

They also spread pressure across the dog’s chest and back, which is useful for highly energetic dogs who are prone to pulling a lot.

Choosing The Right Collar

It’s very important to have a good fitting collar when attaching a lead to it. A collar that is too loose or too tight is not only uncomfortable for dogs, but can also cause injuries when a pressure of a lead is applied.

If a collar is too loose the D-ring where the lead is attached will also move around a lot, causing further friction and discomfort. More importantly this also means the lead contact point will not always be in the best position for your dog’s safety and control.

Choosing The Right Harness

A poorly fitted dog harness is as equally dangerous as poorly fitted collar, so measuring your dog for the correct size harness is important. See our dog harness measuring guide here.

If you prefer not fitting your dog with both a collar and harness, you can still use a double ended dog lead if your harness has two D-ring attachment points: one on the chest and one on the back.

Dog harness attachments like the IDC® Control Y Belt With Front D-Ring can be added to harnesses with only D-ring. Front attaching leashes also provide extra control for dogs more prone to pulling.
